Ondo state first lady, Mrs. Betty Anyawu Akeredolu has expressed the need to support the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, BRECAN by raising adequate funds towards its upcoming 20th anniversary and 3rd international symposium.
According to Mrs Akeredolu, who was speaking at a press conference held at the government house banquet hall in Akure, Ondo state capital, the previous fundraising initiative, Seed for Life, witnessed challenges in terms of recruiting youths to support the scheme.
“Raising money in this environment is really different and challenging. Back then, raising money was really difficult.
“We came up with a plan to raise funds such as The Garage Sales initiative. It was in the 10th year that we dropped the initiative. It is important to appreciate evaluation.”
The latest fundraising awareness platform according to her, is the “Jog for Life” initiative, which ushered in volunteers especially young girls who came en masse to support BRECAN.
The Jog for Life was held yesterday, October 7 in Ibadan and is centered on raising breast health awareness.
The first lady urged all and sundry to support the scheme financially, which will help in setting up programs such as the establishment of the BRECAN orientation exercise for young girls in secondary schools and construction of health centers in each local government for women in their forties to undergo a mammogram test.
The symposium will be centered on providing a platform for international and local breast cancer experts who will discuss recent trends as well as the challenges and solutions to combating breast cancer.
About 3000 people are expected to be in attendance during the program.
