The Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Agboola Ajayi has solicited the support of traditional rulers in sensitising their subjects on the need for proper hygiene against the spread of Lassa fever.
Ajayi disclosed this during a visit to the palace of Osemawe of Ondo, Oba Victor Kiladejo.
In a statement released by the press officer in the Deputy Governor’s Office, Mr Sunday Ajibola, Ajayi called on the royal fathers to leverage the close relationship they have with the people.
“Royal fathers are closer the people than anyone else. I have come with the mandate from the governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu. The government needs your support in enlightenment and making the people aware of the dangers of unhealthy living.
“This way of life is the cause of the deadly Lassa fever. We need to let farmers and food sellers know the danger inherent in drying foodstuffs such as garri in the open field or space.
” Rats get attracted to those to eat the raw food items and drop their waste on the food. We are appealing to our Royal fathers to use their influence and reach to get across to our people so that this preventable spread of Lassa fever does not get here” Ajayi said.
The Osemawe assured the Deputy Governor of his unflinching support in the fight against Lassa fever.
” Aside from the conventional medium, I will bring the matter up at the weekly meeting, involving myself, the baales, the iyalojas, the high chief and other subjects”.
The deputy Governor also condemned the activities of the Fulani herdsmen and assured the people that a committee has been set up by the State Government to proffer a lasting solution to the lingering situation.
However, he admonished the people to embrace a cordial relationship in the spirit of one Nigeria.
The Deputy Governor was accompanied by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Funso Esan and Caretaker Chairman Akure South Local Government, Mrs Margret Atere.
