The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, AAUA, Ondo State have joined the nationwide strike embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC SUNSHINE HERALD can confirm.
In a letter signed by ASUU AAUA Chairman, Dr. Sola Fayose which was made available to SUNSHINE HERALD, members of the union were directed to stop all academic activities in the institution.
This came after a meeting of the institution’s branch of ASUU on Thursday, September 27, 2018.
The statement read: “Therefore, as directed by the leadership of the union, all ASUU members (AAUA inclusive) are part of the strike action declared by the NLC as from midnight of Wednesday, 26th September 2018.
“Therefore what to note and do are:
1. Do not teach any course whatsoever
2. Do not attend any statutory meeting
3. Do not conduct or supervise and examination at any level
4. Do not engage in supervision of project or thesis
5. Do not force any academic to teach, supervise theses and projects at any level or attend meetings
6. The ONLY source of information on the warning strike action is your BRANCH Chairperson.”
Members were enjoined to see the struggle as a collective one, while it also noted that it has put in place measure to identify and sanction “defaulting members.”
It will be recalled NLC gave the Federal government 2 weeks ultimatum to approve their request of increasing the current minimum wage paid to government workers.
The NLC thereafter proceeded on an indefinite warning strike effective Wednesday, September 26 after the FG could not meet its demands.
The minimum wage of N18,000 was introduced by the former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan.
The minimum wage is the the least payment a government worker should earn as benefit of their services to the nation.
A visit to the institution by our reporter yesterday however showed that all administrative works and duties in the institution were on.
It was however to be put on hold today after the congress held in the school by the Senior Staff Association Of Nigeria Universities, SSANU, AAUA Chapter.
